St. Jordi’s Day. As you read the title, you may be wondering what St. Jordi’s Day is. St. Patrick's Day? Valentine’s Day? St. Jordi’s Day is a romantic day. St. Jordi was a knight who slayed a dragon to save a princess. When he did, he took the most beautiful rose from the rose bush and gave it to her. Today, in remembrance of what he did, the men give the woman a rose.

This spectacular holiday isn’t the only thing happening that day. Cervantes and Shakespeare passed away on St. Jordi’s Day. Catalonia then blended these two unforgettable moments. Now, the women give the men books in exchange.

Yesterday, we took a stroll in and around Las Ramblas to discover what they do. As we walked down, we noticed there were many book sales and tables set up selling roses. Many of the tables had tablecloths that were the Catalonian flag. It's the official lovers day here. The roses were very creative and there were many kinds. Some were the common pure red while others were an exotic blue or multi-colored. Our dad even got us roses. My sisters and I got beautiful red ones and my mother got a pure red one with blue sparkles and a Catalonian flag ribbon. Not only were there plenty of books and roses but also there were exclusive St. Jordi's Day cakes. We, of course, had to get one. It was delicious. There was whipped cream between every layer of fluffy vanilla cake topped with a thin piece of chocolate that had an elaborate picture of St. Jordi made with powdered sugar and a rose that tasted like communion bread.

Las Ramblas had the biggest crowd we have ever seen. Restaurants with special St. Jordi's Day menus were packed, everyone's hands were full with roses, balloons, or books, a clown entertaining kids was making a crowd form, and there was a professional camera hovering above us. St. Jordi's Day was a day I'll never forget.
