Croatia: Parrots and Eye-Catching Roofs

Recently, we went to Croatia. There, we went in to churches, became a pirate and put colorful parrots on our shoulders, saw the beautiful salty blue sea, and were educated on why so many houses have bright orange roofs.

The church we went into, St. Nicholas, was great. It had mysterious maroon walls and dim lights. In the center, there was an elaborate painting of Jesus. The painting was really bright in the dark room and it looked like he was glowing. The walls stretched all the way to the sky. They even had a small room in the church that looked like a wild garden.

My favorite part was holding the parrots. A man was dressed as a pirate put parrots on everybody happy to take any donations for charity. I held a intelligent, lime green one with beady little eyes. I wasn't as adventurous as Sofia and Cassandra. Sofia held two, and Cassandra held four! We all were a bit nervous as the parrots claw dug into our flesh. But once we got used to the tingling sensation, we started to relax and finally get into the pirate spirit.

The sea was pure blue clean aqua. We didn't go to the beach, but we still were able to catch a glimpse of the Mediterranean crashing lazily into the rocky beach.

Croatia started the war of independence in 1991 because of an earlier war. After the loss of that battle. They fought again soon after for freedom and independence. Now, pretty much all the house roofs are orange. That's because in the war many roofs collapsed. In honor of the war, when the houses were redone, each roof that collapsed was redone in a bright orange color. This represents freedom and independence of their country.

  1. Yikes! Those parrots are a lot bigger than the ones we saw in Barcelona. Did you walk on the wall in Dubrovnik? sounds like you enjoyed Croatia! EP
